Social Security Benefits

Social Security Benefits

Losing a loved one can bring financial concerns in addition to the emotional challenges of grief. Social Security survivor benefits may provide financial assistance to eligible family members following the death of someone who worked and paid into Social Security.

What are Social Security Death Benefits?

Monthly survivor benefits may be available to qualifying spouses, former spouses, children, and dependent parents. The amount a family member receives is based on the deceased person's Social Security earnings record and the survivor's eligibility.

In addition to monthly benefits, Social Security may provide a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 to an eligible surviving spouse or child. This payment is subject to specific eligibility requirements and must be applied for within two years of the date of death.

Who qualifies for benefits?

Survivor benefits may be available to:

  • A surviving spouse age 60 or older, or age 50 or older if they have a qualifying disability.
  • A surviving divorced spouse who meets certain eligibility requirements.
  • A surviving spouse of any age who is caring for the deceased's child who is under age 16 or has a qualifying disability.
  • An unmarried child under age 18, or up to age 19 if attending elementary or secondary school full time.
  • An adult child whose disability began before age 22.
  • A dependent parent age 62 or older who meets Social Security's requirements.

Eligibility varies depending on individual circumstances.

Reporting a Death and Applying for Benefits

In most cases, the funeral home reports a death to the Social Security Administration. If the death has not been reported, a surviving family member should contact Social Security.

Applications for monthly survivor benefits cannot currently be completed online. Families should contact the Social Security Administration to discuss eligibility and the application process.
